Unlock Your Inner Power: Why Moms Need to Grant Themselves Permission to Thrive | Self-Mastery for Moms

It’s All About Permission

Have you ever searched for the Master Key, the one you’ve been told will unlock the door to all the answers? So many teachers, gurus, and spiritual leaders seem to hand you that key, and yet, time and time again, you find that the door remains shut. Why?

Because you don’t have permission to open it. The key is useless without the one thing that truly unlocks the door—permission. And here’s where it gets tricky: no teacher, no matter how wise, can give you that permission. You are the only one who can.

Permission is granted when the head and the heart unite as one. When your mind and spirit are in sync, that's when true permission is born. Until then, you’ll find yourself standing at the threshold, key in hand, unable to open the door.

There’s an ancient story in Chinese philosophy about the Foo Dogs, the legendary guardians of the Forbidden City. The Forbidden City is you—the sacred space of your soul. Standing at the gates of this city are two massive lions, one representing your conscious mind and the other your subconscious. In the teachings of Carl Jung, we might call them the animus and anima, the masculine and feminine aspects of your psyche.

These lions are not just guarding the gates, though. They are your shadow selves, the parts of you that you’ve been taught to fear, deny, or suppress. The conscious and subconscious mind must ask these guardians for permission to enter, but they will never grant it.

Here’s why: because you’re asking for permission from something you believe is separate from you. You see the shadow as something outside yourself, something to battle or overcome. As long as you hold this belief, you will forever be standing at the keyhole, frustrated and confused as to why the door won’t open.

But here’s the secret: the shadow is you. Those Foo Dogs aren’t guarding the gates to keep you out—they are waiting for you to realize they are part of you. Once you stop asking for permission from something external, and instead recognize that the only permission needed comes from within, the doors open effortlessly.

You’ve been taught to fear the shadow, to see it as a force working against you, when in truth, it’s the very key to your liberation. The moment you integrate your shadow self, when your conscious and subconscious minds embrace what they have rejected, that’s when true mastery begins. The door to your inner city, your soul’s domain, swings open—not through force, but through the gentle realization that you were never separate from the key, the door, or the permission in the first place.

This is the secret that so many teachers point to but can never give you. Only you can give yourself permission. When your head and heart unify, when you see the shadow as an integral part of who you are, that’s when you finally step through the door and into the fullness of your being.
